I am not a farmer or a gardener. I don’t have to be. People in my church bring by all the produce that I need. But, I do know a little about gardening that if you plant pumpkin seeds what will come up? Pumpkins. What about corn? What about tomatoes? What a shock would it be if you set out the grow corn and then a whole field of watermelons came up? It would unnatural, it would be seemingly impossible. Why, because we know that whatever you sow, you are going to reap.
What does God word say about sowing and reaping? Paul knew about sowing in reaping.
Gal 6:7-8 Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap, (8) because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.
Paul’s context was the church at Galatia. Judaizers (Jewish Legalist Zealots who claimed to be Christians) liked Jesus, they just said you better get circumcised and follow the law of Moses if you want to be saved. They came to Galatia and got all the people Paul had ministered to upset and thinking they were not saved and had to be Jewish to be saved. This group gained a sizable following that gave the impression that their arguments had merit. Even Peter got caught up in their heresy, Paul boldly rebuked him to his face (Gal 2)
But Paul is saying don’t be fooled about this you false teaching and the damage you have done will come back on you! You preach against the saving grace of Christ alone, and you will reap not of that saving grace!
But, does this verse not contradict grace? Because isn’t the essence of the Gospel is about us not reaping the consequences for the sin he has sown? Yes, as Christians we sow and plead and beg for forgiveness from Christ alone for our salvation and we are assured that we have already reaped a salvation that will be fully realized at the return of Christ.
2Co 5:21 He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Now, what does this verse have to say to use today?
First: You can disobey, you can sin against, you can deny, you curse, but you are not going to mock God!
Numbers 32:23 But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.
I am not saying that we don’t receive grace and mercy, far more than we deserve but your actions as a Christian are not neutral, it is not I am saved I have received grace and forgiveness and how I live no longer matters. God’s grace is free, but God choices what and when he will please and put the full resources of heaven behind. If you right now as a Christian are sowing sin, you cannot expect for God to bless the sin in your life! Because, in our life and ministry we needs God’s blessing, we need God’s favor. Apart from it we can do nothing.
Second is the scary part: A farmer reaps in greater proportions than he has sown. If he plants wheat, more wheat comes up. In the same way, if we sow to the flesh, the flesh will increase in size and strength.A little seed sown can have a huge return and the relationship between what he sows and what he reaps is exponential. A farmer can plant one apple seed and receive hundreds of apples over time. One of the big lies today is if it happens in Las Vegas it stays in Las Vegas. Sin is always funny, glamorous and exciting. Sin has no downside, it also a blast. It kills us, and destroys you life, family, marriage, and church.
- Do you want spiritual maturity in your life?
Unless you sow grace enabled time with God in prayer and Bible study you will not see it
- Do you want your church to grow?
Unless you sow prayer for revival and evangelistic fervor your church will not grow
- Do you want to see change in the direction of your marriage?
Unless you sow an openness to allow God’s spirit to change your heart and fill it with love and forgiveness you may not see it
- Do you want God to provide for your needs?
Unless you sow tithing and sacrificial giving, you may never have your needs met
- Do you want to become Christ-like?
Then you better feed on the word of Life?
- Men, do you want your wife to adore you and desire to love, respect, and honor you?
Then you better sow the sacrificial kind of love that Christ showed for the church
Old saying is “Sow a thought, and you reap an act; Sow an act, and you reap a habit; Sow a habit, and you reap a character; Sow a character, and you reap a destiny”I always tell the leaders of my church we are designed to get the results we are gettingThe good and the bad come from what we sow.
Take time and be honest, maybe you life and walk with God is stagnating because you are not sowing good seed. Take a moment and look at the sowing and reaping relationship going on in the areas of your life.
- What are you sowing and reaping in your life?
- What are you investing your time, money, and energy into?
- What results do you hope to receive for your efforts?
- What are you planting, even if nothing come to mind you are sowing something, I guess you are left to wonder what it will be coming up?
